“Be STRONG enough to stand alone, SMART enough to know when you need help, and BRAVE enough to ask for it.”
This Mother’s Day, as we celebrate our mothers and all that they do for us, I would like to focus on one of the less-talked-about aspects of motherhood.
Being a mother is an exercise in selflessness. Pregnancy and birth are taxing on both the body and mind, as mothers are pushed to their limits. And that is just the beginning.
What follows next is a lifelong commitment that has its share of joys and triumphs but is also filled with sacrifice. Mothers often invest more in others than we invest in ourselves. This is a necessary commitment to ensure that we effectively raise the next generation.
Being a mother is often a thankless and exhausting job. There is often nobody to nurture the nurturers.
Let’s celebrate the joys of motherhood but let’s also have practical conversations about the areas where our mothers need more support from family and loved ones. And while our mothers often seem to be an unending well of love and comfort to help us throughout our lives, let’s encourage them to take breaks as needed, prioritize their emotional and mental health, and take steps to preserve their physical wellness.
Let’s give our mothers time and space to invest in themselves. Motherhood is an important part of womanhood but it is not the only thing that should define women who are mothers.
Most of all, let’s remember to celebrate our mothers today and every day, recognizing that being a mother is simultaneously one of the most beautiful and most challenging experiences faced in our lives.
Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and mother figures throughout The Bahamas!
