On behalf of the officers and members of the Progressive Liberal Party, l express condolences to the government and people of Ghana on the passing of their former president, Mr. Jerry John Rawlings.
He was seventy-three years old.
Born in the capital Accra, Mr. Rawlings began his career as a military officer, but it was through the institution of politics as the founder and leader of the National Democratic Congress that he made his most indelible impact on the empowernent of the Ghanaian people and the development of that country.
He served as president for a brief period during 1979 and again from 1981 to 2001. This freedom fighter led a military junta until 1992 before serving two terms as the democratically elected president of Ghana.
Joining a list of notable African freedom fighters such as Patrice Lumumba, Robert Mugabe and Nelson Mandela, President Rawlings' legacy will no doubt cast a towering shadow over the Republic of Ghana for generations to come.
