BPL on North Andros fire

Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL), wishes to advise the public that the company is presently working to restore power to portions of North Andros following a fire at its power plant early this morning.

While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, initial reports indicate that at approximately 3:45am this morning, Thursday, August 9th, 2018 a fire broke out at one of the Company’s rental generator units at its North Andros Power Plant. BPL employees immediately shutdown all fuel lines supplying the generator, preventing the fire from spreading beyond the unit.

The fire was contained at approximately 6:00 am, however, the unit was completely destroyed. Although the damage caused by the fire was significant, BPL officials are thankful that there were no reported injuries to employees or to the public.

As a result of the fire, consumers in North Andros may experience intermittent outages throughout the remainder of the day, as BPL continues its investigations and seeks to return its system to at state of normalcy.

Again, BPL thanks its customers for their continued patience and apologizes for any inconvenience caused.
